A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a private network that encrypts and transmits data while it travels from one place to another. A VPN is often used to secure connections to public Wi-Fi hotspots.

Introduction
If you have a Fios router, you can set up your VPN directly onto the router. This will encrypt all data passing through the router, ensuring that your privacy and security are protected. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to set up VPN on Fios router.
What is a VPN?
A VPN is a private network that uses a public network (usually the internet) to connect remote sites or users together. The VPN uses “virtual” connections routed through the internet from the business’s private network to the remote site or employee. By using a VPN, businesses ensure security — anyone intercepting the encrypted data can’t read it.
The Benefits of Using a VPN
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a technology that creates a safe and encrypted connection over a less secure network, such as the internet. VPNs can be used to access region-restricted websites, shield your browsing activity from prying eyes on public Wi-Fi, and more.
There are many reasons to use a VPN, but security and privacy are the most common. Many people use a VPN to protect their online activity from ISPs (Internet Service Providers), government surveillance, and hackers.
If you’re interested in using a VPN, we’ve compiled a list of the best VPNs forFios routers. All you need is a router that supports VPNs and an active subscription with one of the following services:
NordVPN – Best Overall
ExpressVPN – Best for Speed
IPVanish – Best for Security
Windscribe – Best Free Option
How to Install a VPN on Your Router
If you’re looking to add an extra layer of security to your home network, installing a VPN on your router is a great way to do it. A VPN, or virtual private network, encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a server in another location, making it harder for anyone to snoop on your web activity. But setting up a VPN on your router isn’t as simple as downloading an app. Here’s how to do it.
What You’ll Need
A compatible router. For the purposes of this guide, we’ll be using the FiOS Quantum Gateway Router G1100.
-A copy of the latest firmware for your router.
-An Ethernet cable.
-A computer or laptop connected to your router via Ethernet.
-A Virtual Private Network provider. For the purposes of this guide, we’ll be using IPVanish. You can get started with a 7-day free trial.
Step One: Download and Install the VPN Client
If you haven’t already done so, the first step is to sign up for a VPN service. We recommend ExpressVPN, but NordVPN and IPVanish are two other great options.
Once you have an account, go to the provider’s website and download their VPN client. Be sure to get the right version for your router—most manufacturers offer different firmware images for different models.
Installing a VPN client on your router is a bit more complicated than installing a VPN client on your computer, but it’s still pretty easy. The process will vary depending on your router’s make and model, but we’ll walk you through it using ExpressVPN as an example.
Step Two: Connect Your Router to Your Computer
The first step is to connect your router to your computer using an Ethernet cable. Once the connection is established, open up your web browser and type in your router’s IP address—this will usually be something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
If you can’t remember your router’s IP address, you can usually find it by typing “ipconfig” into the Command Prompt on Windows or by running the “ifconfig” command on Linux or macOS. The IP address will be listed next to “Default Gateway” under your LAN adapter.
Step Two: Configure the VPN Client
Download and install the VPN client software on your device. This will vary depending on the provider you’ve chosen, but most offer detailed instructions and support if you need it.
Open the VPN client software and sign in with your username and password. Select the country or server location you want to connect to and hit the “Connect” button. Wait a few moments while the connection is established, then check the “status” section of the client to make sure you’re connected. You should see your new IP address as well as the server location you’re connected to.
Step Three: Connect to the VPN
If you have a router that does not support VPNs out of the box, you will need to install a third-party firmware such as DD-WRT or Tomato. We will be using DD-WRT for this tutorial.
If you are not familiar with DD-WRT or Tomato, they are both open source firmware that can be installed on select routers. Once installed, they allow you to set up a VPN on your router so that all the devices connected to it will have their traffic routed through the VPN.
Installing DD-WRT or Tomato on your router can be a bit of a hassle, and it will void your warranty, so we would only recommend doing it if you are comfortable with managing routers and are willing to troubleshoot if something goes wrong.
With that said, let’s get started.
How to Use a VPN on Your Router
There are a few different ways that you can use a VPN on your router. You can use a VPN service that will provide you with a router that is already configured to use their service. You can also configure your existing router to use a VPN service. In this article, we will show you how to configure your Fios router to use a VPN service.
Step One: Choose a VPN Server
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, allows you to create a secure connection to another network over the Internet. VPNs can be used to access region-restricted websites, shield your browsing activity from prying eyes on public Wi-Fi, and more.
Most importantly, though, a VPN can keep your Internet activity private. That’s because when you connect to a VPN server, all of your traffic is routed through that server. As a result, your ISP (Internet Service Provider) can no longer see which websites you’re visiting or what files you’re downloading. They can still see that you’re connecting to a VPN server, but they won’t be able to see what you’re doing once you’re connected.
There are many different reasons why you might want to use a VPN. Maybe you want to access a region-restricted website like Netflix or BBC iPlayer. Maybe you’re worried about being spied on by the government or your ISP. Or maybe you just want to keep your browsing history private.
Whatever your reason for using a VPN, there are a few things you should keep in mind before choosing a VPN server:
-The closer the server is to your physical location, the faster your connection will be.ping -This is the latency of the connection (i.e., how long it takes for data to travel from your computer to the VPN server and back). A lower ping means a faster connection. You can use this website to test the ping of various VPN servers.
-Choose a server that uses a protocol that isn’t blocked by your ISP. For example, if your ISP is blocking OpenVPN traffic, choose a server that uses L2TP/IPsec or PPTP instead.
-You can check which protocols are supported by eachserver on our list ofVPN protocols explained..
-Keep in mind that some servers may be overloaded and slow during peak hours (e.g., 4pm-midnight EST). Try connecting at different times of day to find the fastest connection possible
Step Two: Connect to the VPN
In order to connect to the VPN, you’ll need to enter your credentials into the router. To do this, you’ll need to visit the router’s settings page. The exact process will vary depending on your router, but you should be able to find the settings page by visiting http://192.168.1.1 in your browser.
Once you’re on the settings page, look for a section labeled “VPN” or “Virtual Private Network.” From here, you can add a new VPN connection. Enter the information provided by your VPN provider, including the server address, username, and password.
Once you’ve entered all of the required information, save your changes and restart your router. After it comes back on, you should be connected to the VPN!
Step Three: Enjoy Your VPN Connection!
Now that you’ve configured your router to connect to a VPN, you can enjoy all the benefits of a VPN connection! All the devices on your network will now be able to access the internet through the VPN, which means they’ll be able to benefit from the increased security and privacy that a VPN provides. You can even connect to different VPN servers on different devices, so you can always have the best possible connection.
